We’re working on a large Gov project and on the lookout for a Ruby on Rails Developer to support and enhance a live GOV.UK service. This is a hands-on opportunity for a collaborative engineer who enjoys working across the stack, contributing to architectural decisions, and delivering meaningful user impact within an agile environment.
The Role
You’ll join an autonomous, multidisciplinary team responsible for refining and improving a live digital service. Working across Ruby on Rails and Java (Spring Boot), you’ll help deliver scalable, secure solutions in AWS, ensuring changes are robust, well-tested, and user-focused.
Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to enhance a live GOV.UK service

Build and maintain backend services using Java (Spring Boot) and PostgreSQL

Develop and improve frontend features using Ruby on Rails and GOV.UK Frontend

Contribute to architectural discussions and technical direction

Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code

Participate in agile ceremonies, code reviews, and continuous improvement
Essential
-
Strong hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails and Java (Spring Boot)

Solid AWS experience including serverless (Lambda/Fargate) and Terraform

Experience working with PostgreSQL

Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-based environments

Experience working on live services within agile teams

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Desirable

GDS development experience, including GOV.UK Frontend implementation

Experience working closely with user-centred designers

Mentoring or supporting junior developers

Comfortable presenting technical updates to non-technical stakeholders
